Castelli Gallery is pleased to present Recent Works by Diana Kingsley, Robert Morris, Richard Pettibone, Keith Sonnier, & Mike and Doug Starn, on view from June 17-August 2, 2013.

Diana Kingsley’s penetrating and highly detailed photographic compositions, Bohemian and Community Plot, both 2011, meticulously record the surfaces, textures, and colors of natural objects, evoking traditional still lifes while conveying hyper-realistic views of the world.

Similarly engaging natural forms, Mike and Doug Starn’s recent photography-based works, including The no Mind Not Thinks No Things, 2012-13, relate to the artists’ ongoing depiction of trees. Reshaping the form of limbs and branches through processes of photography, collage, and abstraction, the artists construct visual metaphors for networks, chaos, fragmentation, and other natural phenomena.

Adopting both organic and man-made forms, Robert Morris’ Untitled (Labyrinth) series depicts the maze in various shapes and configurations, wherein simplified black outlines create a field in which the viewer can travel, and become lost. Morris’ Heads series, including Eyeless and Earless from Burns, 2011, similarly relate to notions of vision and loss.

Keith Sonnier’s wood and neon wall sculptures, Botswana Junction Series (IV) and Cohla Junction Series (I), both 2005, resemble tribal shields. In his appropriations of canonical modern masterworks, Richard Pettibone references sculpture through painterly adaptations of two Picasso ‘Guitar’ wall reliefs. Pettibone’s paintings, including Marcel Duchamp, ‘Bicycle Wheel’, relate to a new group of works that will be the subject of Castelli Gallery’s September exhibition.
