Artist, dancer, and choreographer Simone Forti is one of the most influential figures of postmodern dance. Forti revolutionized the medium with her Dance Constructions. Staged in New York in May 1961, these works made use of simple objects such as loops of rope, seesaws, and plywood boxes, which Forti incorporated in her dance performances.
For the past sixty years, Forti has traveled all over the world, performing and teaching workshops. She has developed her art in ways that continued to explore new potentials of the body in motion and in relation to its environment. Her works have been inspired by subjects as diverse as observations of animal movements, the rural Vermont countryside and, with her News Animations (since 1985), the “complexities of public and civic life.”
Please join us for a presentation of a new work, which engages with objects by Robert Morris. Directly following the performance will be a screening of Forti’s video Zuma News, 2013.
Performances will be held at Castelli Gallery’s 24 West 40th Street location on February 9 and 10 at 8pm. A talk with the artists will take place on February 11 at 4:30pm.
All performances are free and open to the public, however seats must be reserved ahead of time since space is limited. To reserve a seat please send an email to broc@castelligallery.com or call the gallery at 212-249-4470
