Leo Castelli Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Robert Morris Ten Works Five Decades” running from May 1 – June 22, 2012. The exhibition will feature ten major works spanning the past five decades of the artist’s career. Works will include iconic felt sculptures, paintings, and works on paper. The works in the exhibition range from 1961 to 2011.
Among the earliest works in the exhibition will be a set of works on paper, Memory Drawings, 1963. These works represent some of the artist’s earliest investigations on the subject of memory, which has since been an integral part of his practice. Also on view from the 1960s will be the early sculpture, Pine Portal with Mirrors, 1961, and a gray felt sculpture from 1967.
The exhibition will feature two works on fiberglass paper from the 1970s, Rubbing of Leonardo Book, 1972, and Body Rubbing, 1973. Works from the 1980s will include a haunting white Hydrocal work from 1980, and an equally visceral black work in fiberglass, Untitled, 1987. Works from the 1990s will include a kinetic felt sculpture, Muffled Sump, 1995. The sound of water emanates from behind the felt surface of this work. The most recent work in the exhibition will be a new sculpture, Box For Standing, 2011.
Spanning five major decades of the artist’s career, the exhibition will shed new light on the artist’s bodies of work, revealing common threads relating to physicality, mortality and memory.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog with a text by the artist.
